ARTIM PROJECT SPACE – YARAT Contemporart Art Space
“Soul is older than body, but not otherwise”, a large piece of cloth was repetitively taken to Baku’s shore, soaked in water for hours, dried under the sunlight and taken back to the studio in a performance piece. Believing that nature is metaphorically bound to memory, the artist wanted to document and monitor the Caspian Sea’s evolution during the period of three months. Stained through the process, it aims to expose the oil industry’s role in the degradation of marine life in Azerbaijan and the five countries that share the sea. Zarfsaz will perform the final act of this work during the show. The cloth will be teared apart and distributed to the audience. In the background, there is a sound, the artist appropriates a text by Roni Horn about El Greco Landscape. Followed by a reading and a minute of silence, the work examines how we take something as vital as the natural world for granted.
